Key Technologies
Our current products include prepGEM™ and forensicGEM™ DNA extraction kits which have been optimized for a wide range of sample types and are especially suited for small or trace samples.
ZyGEM DNA extraction kits use a simple two step temperature modulation to extract DNA in a single, closed tube which reduces the opportunity for contamination and errors. Methods are easily automated using standard liquid handling systems and typically provide DNA ready for PCR in 20 minutes.
Other technologies in development include methods for multiplexed microbial fingerprinting and isothermal DNA amplification.
The Zygem Culture Collection, a unique collection of over 1300 organisms from extreme environments in Antarctica and New Zealand represents over 20 years of work by leading scientist in the field of extremophile biology. Collaborations enabling access to the collection and additional mining of the collection are available.
Current projects include:
- Livestock - prepGEM™ was developed for automated DNA extraction in high-throughput livestock genetics. The Livestock Improvement Corporation of New Zealand has become the first commercial user of this reagent.
- Forensics - the forensicGEM™ DNA isolation range was formulated for the human identity market, and is currently undergoing final validation for use in automated isolation of DNA from database samples at New Zealand’s forensic DNA laboratory at the Institute of Environmental Science and Research Limited (ESR).
