NZ Medical Technologies
From world-leading neo-natal brain monitoring equipment to surgical instruments, New Zealand's medical technologies sector is an exciting, emerging industry.
Demonstrating expertise across specialized manufacturing, engineering, information technology and specialized electronics, Kiwi companies are achieving strong global positions in niche markets indicative of New Zealand's capabilities in the design and manufacture of medical technologies.
Particular strengths lie in areas such as respiratory therapies, sterilizer equipment, patient monitoring technologies, surgical equipment, woundcare therapies, diagnostics, assistive living technologies, and research. With some 80 manufacturing companies within the sector (of which around 25 produce products which are Class II A or higher) exports of NZ medical devices in 2006 amounted to approximately $260m– compared with $70m in 2000.
Exemplifying this capability is New Zealand's largest medical device manufacturer, Fisher and Paykel Healthcare, who export to more than 110 countries worldwide and have experienced 20 percent growth per year for the majority of the last decade.
